Social Services Benefits Coordinator

CABVI is seeking a Social Services Benefits Coordinator to provide social service assistance to Central Industries employees who are blind or visually impaired in areas of benefit counseling, housing, community resources and programs, career pathways, access to CABVI services and other consumer needs as identified.

 

KEY JOB ELEMENTS

  • Assist blind and visually impaired consumers with social and job-related issues by providing counseling, case management, and advocacy services.
  • Educate Central Industry employees about the potential impact employment may have on benefits. Teach them how to report income, track work related expenses, communicate the social security, how to maintain financial records and document income. Advocate for employees of our Utica location. Provide training and information to CABVI management as it relates to this topic.
  • Social Security and other financial benefits management/advocate for all Utica employees. Determine need for monthly SSI/SSD reporting for Utica employees who are blind. Complete reports and oversee staff who assist. Maintain and update backup documentation.
  • Assist in the development of curriculum and lesson plans in areas of soft skill development, work related skills acquisition and other pre-vocational topics. Teach seminars and lessons during pre-vocational programs or other employment related residential programming.
  • Assist with Human Resource functions as related to Central Industries employees.
  • Conducts social security and other financial benefits management/advocate for all Utica employees. Determine need for monthly SSI/SSD reporting for Utica employees who are blind. Complete reports and oversee staff who assist. Maintain and update backup documentation.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with, and is liaison between, appropriate federal and state agencies, community organizations, primary caregivers, and CABVI staff.
  • Maintain case records and complete required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Conduct community presentations and represents CABVI at meetings as assigned by supervisor.
  • Adapt to change and completes other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Consistently achieves annual performance objectives.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Must have ability to effectively present information to consumers, employees, professionals, and general public. Must write effective plans, reports, and correspondence.  Must be able to clearly articulate during stressful situations.  Must have excellent listening skills.

COMPUTER/TECHNICAL SKILLS

Computer knowledge required.  Must be familiar with low vision aids and adaptive equipment. Must be willing to learn new technology.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

High percentage of job requires sitting and performing social service duties.  Frequently required to stand and walk.  Frequently required to talk or hear.  Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop and kneel.  Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.  Vision abilities include close vision, color vision and ability to focus.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the key job elements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

In house position with periodic travel to meetings or conferences.  Noise level is moderate.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree with two years experience counseling people with disabilities required. Must have knowledge of social security and other financial benefits such as Medicaid/SNAP.

$21.00 -$23.00/hour
