Orientation & Mobility Training

“Orientation” refers to the ability to know where you are and where you want to go, whether you are moving from one room to another or walking in your neighborhood.

“Mobility” refers to the ability to move safely, efficiently, and effectively from one place to another, such as being able to walk without tripping, crossing streets, and using public transportation.,

Our Orientation and Mobility specialists assess an individual’s needs and goals. They provide instruction to help you to develop the skills that you need to travel safely and independently within your home, workplace, school, or community.

At CABVI, orientation and mobility professionals teach techniques for safe navigation, including:

  • Safely navigating a set of stairs
  • Moving around their home
  • Crossing streets
  • Accessing public transportation
  • Determining locations
  • Traveling safely in homes, schools, workplaces, and communities

CABVI provides Instruction is available in any of the following areas:

  • Indoor travel
  • Community travel
  • Use of public transportation
  • Street crossings
  • Sighted guide techniques
  • Vision and sensory training
  • Use of a cane and other mobility tools
  • Route planning
  • Spatial and environmental concept development
