Low Vision Treatment

The Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) specializes in helping people with vision loss. Nearly 14 million Americans have low vision, a condition characterized by a visual acuity of 20/70, or worst, sight cannot be improved with glasses, contacts, pharmaceutical therapy or surgery. As vision deteriorates, those affected often find it difficult to accomplish the tasks of everyday life, such as reading, recognizing faces, cooking, driving, and differentiating color.

In addition, there are several visual impairments that affect one’s life. They include but are not limited to, double vision, involuntary eye movements, lack of visual alignment, lack of depth perception, poor ocular mobility, and more. At CABVI, we know that remaining vision is usable vision and our mission is to help make the most of the vision you have.

Low Vision Services
At our Utica and Syracuse facilities, patients work with professionals who specialize in vision care. CABVI’s optometrists and vison rehabilitation therapists will evaluate your visual impairment and rehabilitation needs by working with you to develop a plan to assist you with maintaining your independence and quality of life.

Low vision optometrists will complete a comprehensive low vision evaluation, which includes some of the latest diagnostic testing equipment, to develop a clear understanding of the impact from the changes in your vision. This evaluation is an assessment of your visual needs. Testing will measure the ability to see in low-contrast situations, and establish your field of sight, visual acuity, and lighting needs.

CABVI Low Vision Optometrists may prescribe low vision optical aids, including hand-held magnifiers, specialized reading spectacles, specialized lighting, and methods to reduce glare, electronic video magnification machines, and more.

Prior to your visit, we will have secured from your primary eye care provider your medical history and most current vision exam information.
