Stay Up-to-Date on Upstate, NY with Reading Services for the Blind

When you are blind or otherwise visually impaired, reading – an activity most people take for granted – can be difficult. You still want to enjoy your favorite newspaper, magazine or book, but access to that kind of material is not always easy. But did you know that with CABVI and WCNY Classic FM, you can enjoy the publications you love, thanks to the Read-Out Reading Service. WCNY provides radio reading services for the blind and visually impaired, while CABVI provides a free, specially tuned radio so that people can listen to the programs.

With the Read-Out Reading Service, blind and visually impaired individuals throughout Upstate NY are able to access reading services all week long. Read-Out is a free service used to inform and entertain people with visual impairments. Weekday program schedules include readings of the Syracuse Post Standard, the Guardian, the Utica Observer-Dispatch and USA Today. Additionally, there are readings of the CNY Business Journal, the New Yorker, Watertown Daily Times, Science Today and more. The weekday program schedule runs from 7 a.m. through 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Throughout the evening hours and overnight during the week, there is a wide array of programming available to suit many different interests. From short stories and mysteries to the New York Times and National Geographic, there are programs available for adults and teenagers alike. Reading services for the blind in Upstate NY during the overnight hours include shows from the Radio Talking Book Network. Weekend programming is similar to weekday, with some additional magazines included.

Aside from newspaper and magazine articles and books, the WCNY reading service for the blind in Upstate, NY provides access to other helpful information as well. People can hear the weather, lottery, grocery listings and obituaries as well. The WCNY Read-Out Reading Service is made possible by sponsorships from local businesses, as well as Read-Out volunteers who read published content daily.
